How I Stopped My Mind’s Betrayal

I don’t know about you, but for me, one of the most frustrating things about manifesting is that, if left to its own devices, my Mind tries to ruin things for me every step of the way.

My Mind tries to concentrate on what I don’t want instead of what I do want. It responds to my present-tense-believe-I-have-it-now affirmation statements (”I love spending time with the funny, sweet, attractive man of my dreams”) with rude sarcastic comments like, “Oh, you WISH” or “In your DREAMS.” (My Mind frequently mocks me in all CAPS.)

But one of the biggest tricks my Mind plays on me, to ruin my efforts to manifest the life of my dreams, is one that I had rarely seen mentioned in manifestation training programs, until a few months ago, when I discovered a terrific manifestation success tool called the Dream Manifesto Wizard.

I found this incredibly frustrating, embarrassing, and obviously it kept me from manifesting much of anything.

The ability to successfully manifest what you want requires that you pay ATTENTION to what you want. It requires that you imprint on your subconscious mind the idea that what you want already exists in the world around you. It requires that the energy of your thoughts vibrates to match the energy of what you want. And yet my self-defeating mind was preventing me from doing ANY of these things, with the simple use of complete forgetfulness!

Now, I try to be fair with myself, and I hope you do too. I’m busy; we’re all busy. Each of my days involves juggling the schedules and desires of my family, my job, and myself. It’s easy to forget things.

Over the years, I tried a variety of things to keep my manifestation visualizations at the forefront of my mind. I added them to my “To Do” lists. I set reminder bells in my computer’s calendar. I set up habits to visualize as part of my morning and evening routines.

Every (Single) Day

Several months ago, I learned a crucial element of Manifestation Meditationmeditation and manifestation that either no one had ever mentioned to me before, or I had blocked from my awareness, because it wasn’t information I wanted to hear.

It’s not information that makes this process easier. But it is information that can make it actually WORK, which is … kind of the point. It’s a waste to do something that’s easy but ineffective, and yet that’s what I unknowingly did, for years.

The crucial element, the secret that can take meditating for manifestation from a relaxing, enjoyable, but not terribly effective hobby, to a strong, effective step toward manifesting what you want to achieve in your life, is to meditate and visualize every single day, WITHOUT FAIL.

If you visualize for 17 days, then skip a day, then visualize for another 13 days … IT. WON’T. WORK.

Manifestation MeditationWell that explains a lot!

Before I learned this, I bet I never actually performed a visualization every day without fail for 30 or more days in a row, EVER. I’ve done them for months and month on end, but always missing a day here or there. And, what do you know, they never worked all that well!

The study I heard about, that proved the necessity of “everydayness” in training your subconscious mind, involved astronauts who were required to wear glasses that made the world appear upside down. They had to wear the glasses every minute of every day (even when showering, etc.). It was very disconcerting and difficult. The study was meant to show how the astronauts would handle the stress of being constantly disoriented, in preparation for their space travel.

What happened, though, was that long about the 25th – 30th day (different days for different astronauts), their brains got the message and adjusted the image they were seeing back to being right side up. They changed their subconscious minds. They trained them.

So, after this surprising result, the researchers conducted a follow-up experiment wherein the astronauts wore the same glasses for 17 days, then took a day off, then started wearing them again. Scientists wanted to see if the astronaut’s brains would still adjust around the 30th day.

Guess what. They DIDN’T. None of the astronauts adjusted to the upside-down glasses on the 25th day. Or the 26th, or the 27th, or the 30th. In fact, it took an ADDITIONAL 25-30 days for the adjustment to happen.

This made it clear that if the brain-training efforts skipped ONE day, just a single day, it was like they didn’t do it at all. Missing one day set everything back to zero.

Well … I sure wish someone had mentioned that to me a little earlier. It might have saved me years of visualizing 6 out of every 7 days … to no avail!

Manifesting with Guided Meditation CDs

How to Manifest – Step 4b – Release the Result


Although the previous post, on step 4a of the process of manifesting your desires, covered the idea of calming your worries, I realized that there’s a larger aspect of releasing worry that still needs to be addressed, and THIS is really the hardest step.

Recognize that whether you manifest your desire or you don’t manifest your desire, it’s all okay.

If you’re new at the manifesting process, just reading the above sentence may have hurt you. You may have cried out, “Are you kidding me?! I’m here to learn how to manifest my desires, not to be told that it’s okay if I DON’T manifest my desires! It’s NOT okay if I don’t manifest my desires!”

At first, it can seem like an impossible proposition. How can you both pursue something and believe that it doesn’t matter whether you get it or not?!

You may have to work on this one as you go along, day by day, taking the steps to manifest what you desire. You can learn how to both strive for something and simulteneously realize that your life will still be important, joyous, and meaningful, even if you don’t actually get what you’re working towards, regardless of what that is.

Part of this is just enjoying the process. Your life doesn’t start the day that you manifest your desire. Your life has already started, and you can enjoy each moment of it, regardless of how far you are from your visualized desires.

Another part is recognizing that there are things you can’t control, and you must release them from your mental grasping. Take the steps toward manifesting your desire that are under your control, and release the idea of trying to control the things you can’t control.

Lastly is the idea that life is eternal. Physics tells us that energy can never be created or destroyed, but simply changes from one form to another. Religion (and our own experience of self-awareness) tells us that there is a core part of ourselves that is not confined by our bodies, but instead connected to the infinite magic that is the mind, the spirit, and all-encompassing energies of thoughts, emotions, and intuitions.

Manifesting your desires in this life is a beautiful thing, and that’s why life helps you out along your path to manifesting. Playing with your abilities, your creativities, your imagination, and your energetic efforts at manifesting your desires is part of fulfilling your purpose in the life you’re living. Whether you actually manifest what you set out to manifest or not, you should enjoy each living, breathing moment of the daily journey from here to there, knowing that everything is exactly all right, all the time, no matter what.

How to Manifest – Step 4a – Don’t Worry While Manifesting


In my opinion, this is the hardest step. Visualizing what you want is not only an easier step, it’s actually a blast. The more you do it, the more fun it becomes. Taking action is a little harder, but the steps are moving you toward manifesting your greatest desires, and so the steps can also be lots of fun.

So why do we worry so much about them?

We worry that we might not be able to get what we want. We worry that we WILL get what we want and then we’ll lose it. We worry that we’ll get what we want but it will bring with it all kinds of negative implications we never realized it would bring.

We worry that people will laugh at us when what we want from life becomes obvious to them (because we’re manifesting it). We worry that if we admit what we want and then we don’t get it, we’ll look like fools. We worry that people won’t even be surprised when we look like fools. That they’ll say, “Oh, he’s always going after these silly dreams. He never gets them.”

Our worries go on and on. I could fill the internet with lists of all the worries our mind invents to sway us from our path, to stand in the way of our manifesting our desires.

As hard as it is to believe, our mind thinks it’s doing us a favor by pointing out all these dream-killing worries. It thinks it’s protecting us from hurt.

What you need to do is convince it that manifesting your desires is more important to you than any worldly hurts you may face along the way.

You are an adventurer. You are a dreamer. You are one of those special people who is WILLING to risk being hurt (and not just to risk it, but to actually EXPERIENCE hurt) in order to manifest the life you desire, the life you know you were meant to live.

Although these worries are natural, you must learn to quiet them, or your unconscious mind will become distracted by the worries and start to become confused about whether your DO want to manifest your desires or your DON’T want to manifest your desires.

To quiet your worries, follow these steps:

  1. Notice that a worried or negative thought has come to your mind.
  2. Don’t regret or chastise your mind for having these worries.
  3. Say to yourself, “It’s okay. Thank you, Mind, for trying to protect me, but I’m not worried. I want to manifest . I am safe. Not matter what happens, I am safe.”
  4. Look for any signs of remaining worry in your body and release them. If your stomach is clenched or your jaw is tight, relax those muscles.
  5. Conduct a micro-visualization, where you picture a flashed image (5-10 seconds is enough) of yourself living the desire you’re working on manifesting.
  6. As you micro-visualize, think, “I have this, and I am so happy about.”
  7. Move forward as though the worry never happened. You have canceled its existence in your mind.

When you first start your first process of manifesting your desires, you may have to go through these anti-worry steps many times a day. Or, if you’re like me, you’ll go through quite a while when you seem to be worry-free and then you’ll have a day where all your worries gang up and attack you all at once, and you have to conduct your anti-worry practice what seems like every 30 minutes.

As time passes, and you have more and more manifesting steps under your belt, the times of worry will be fewer and fewer. They may never go away all together, but they’ll happen infrequently, and you’ll be able to easily feel how successful your anti-worry practice is. As you finish step 7, you’ll know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you have, indeed, completely cancelled that worry, that it was never necessary, and that you’re getting closer to manifesting your desire with each passing day.

How to Manifest – Step 3 – Taking Action


Taking Action to Manifest Your Desires


This step is a bit disappointing to some people who are investigating the idea of manifesting their desires. They were hoping that manifesting involved just sitting on their couches and imagining that they already had what they want, then opening their eyes and discovering it all around them. (Personally, I thought this should be an effective method for losing my extra weight and put it into practice, sitting on that couch, for years.)

Sorry.

That’s not how it works.

Once you get over the disappointment that manifesting isn’t actually a magic trick, you may be happy to discover that it can still be a fun and joyous process, called “living your life.”

Once you have the idea of what you want firmly implanted in your unconscious mind, the next thing to do is to think of something you could do to move toward achieving that vision in the real world.

There are two keys to this action-taking.

Manifesting: The Action Steps


1. Don’t let yourself become overwhelmed by what feels like the distance between your current reality and your visualized reality. It may feel like a large distance, but it isn’t. Don’t worry that if feels like there are 120 years worth of work between here and there. Just think of something small that you could do to move toward it today.

2. Don’t worry if you don’t know exactly the right thing to do first to move toward manifesting your visualized reality. It’s not necessary to know exactly the best thing to do. It’s only necessary to do SOMETHING. If you happen to have several ideas of things you could do, pick whichever one most strikes your fancy. If you only have one idea, just do that one. Try something. Once you’ve done that one thing, you can see whether it seemed to move you closer to your visualized reality or not. If it did, then do the next thing on the same path. If what you tried didn’t seem to work, then think of something else to try, and do that next.

If you can’t think of ANYTHING that you could do to move you toward the visualized reality, then you can do one of two things.

(a) Look yourself dubiously in the eye. Can you REALLY not think of ANYTHING that might move you closer to what you want, or can you think of things, but you don’t want to do them? Do they perhaps make you afraid? There’s almost always SOMETHING you can think of that MIGHT move you closer to what you want to manifest. Don’t let fear stand in your way. It doesn’t matter if the thing you’ve thought of won’t work. Try it anyway. What would be so terrible about just giving it a try?

(b) If you’re 100% convinced that you have NO idea what you could do that might move you just a tiny step closer to manifesting your desires, then ask yourself a question, right before you start your next visualization, meditation session. Ask yourself, “How can I move just a little closer to X?” Just ask yourself the question quietly, and then meditate and wait for the answer to come to you. If it doesn’t come the first time, ask it again the next time you visualize and meditate. Remind your unconscious mind that you’ll be asking this question until it provides an answer. It soon will, if just to get you to stop bugging it.

And that’s it. Keep taking some small step each day in the direction of the desire you want to manifest.

The magic comes as a little time passes and you discover that the tiny steps you took, without being sure they would even work, have begun to snowball into some actual progress. People and events and objects begin to come to your attention, that you realize can be of great help in manifesting your desires. Include them in the next steps you take, and your progress will speed up exponentially, until you’re moving rapidly closer to manifesting everything you desire!

How to Manifest – Step 2 – Feel What You Want


In order to manifest the abundance and prosperity you desire, you can’t just calmly think the words, “I want abundance and prosperity.” There are several reasons why doing so won’t manifest what you desire.

The first is the use of “I want” (or “I wish” or “I will have”). Your unconscious mind has no concept of a future. It only have now. Therefore, if you tell it that the reality you’re manifesting is, “I want abundance and prosperity,” then what it will create for you is a reality in which you are always wanting abundance and prosperity … because you never get it. To manifest your desires, you must imagine already having them. “I live in abundance and prosperity” is a much better reality.

Additionally, your unconscious mind doesn’t speak English (or any other language involving words). How can it, when your unconscious mind is with you from the day of your birth, and you live several years with no (or very few) words. If your conscious mind communicated with words, it wouldn’t be able to fully speak to you until you were 5 or 6 years old. So, instead, you unconscious mind must communicate in a method that makes sense from the very beginning: images and emotions.

You unconscious mind communicates to you through images of your five senses (not just visual images but also sound, taste, touch, and smell) and the emotions that this create in you. Therefore, to communicate back to your unconscious mind, you must use your imagination to create the images and emotions that you want it to create in your reality. Have an imagination (”visualization”) experience of your desire having come true all around you. Repeat this imagination experience at least twice a day, for at least 10 minutes each time.

This causes your unconscious mind to start to struggle with something psychologists refer to a “cognitive dissonance,” which essentially means that you can’t believe two opposite things at the same time. You can’t believe, “I attract wealth easily” at the same time you believe, “I’ll never have any money.” If you convince your unconscious mind that the true side is “I attract wealth easily,” then it will set out to help you notice and easily act on the opportunities that prove this statement to be true.

If you want to attract wealth easily, then have an emotional imagining (visualizing) experience of attracting and being joyously wealthy several times a day, as often as possible. Keep your mind off the idea of not having money. If (”when,” really) you have a thought about not having enough money, briefly follow it up by thinking, “Cancel that” and take 10 seconds to feel a burst of emotion over the experience of easy wealth that is the reality of your imagination.

When you convince your mind that wealth is your reality, your senses will start to bring to your attention the real opportunities to increase your wealth that are around you every day. This moves you on to step 2.

1. KNOW/HAVE/BE what you want. To get what you want, you have to first know what it is. What do you want? You need to go beyond just knowing that you want in your head, You have to experience the emotions of already having it. You need to visualize yourself already doing, being, having whatever it is you want, and the visualizations can’t be cold and clinical. This is your dream come true. You must experience the visualization including the waves of joyous emotion that you’d have if you were living that dream at this very moment.

When you convince your subconscious mind that you in fact HAVE what you want (and you convince it by having the emotions and visualizations identical to those you’d feel and see when the dream comes true), then your unconscious mind feels no option but to create that reality around you.

How to Manifest – Step 1 – Know What You Want


The key to knowing how to manifest your desires comes from the strange but wonderful fact that your unconscious mind can’t tell the difference between things going on around your body in the physical world (what we’d call “real” things) and things that are going on inside your mind (in what we’d call “imagination). In a wonderfully childlike way, your unconscious mind believes your emphatic imaginings to be just as real as concrete “reality.”

Scientific studies have shown that people have improved their weight loss success by imagining that they’re exercising. Athletes have improved their performance by imagining that they’re practicing and honing their skills. Just like the people in these studies, you can manifest the results you want by experiencing them in your imagination, so that your unconscious mind will make that imagination a reality.

If you’ve ever woken up during a strong dream, you may have felt your heart pounding and your muscles clenching. Tears may have been rolling down your cheeks, or you might have laughed so loud that you woke yourself up. These experiences demonstrate the fact that your mind and body buy into the “imagination” of your dreams absolutely. While you were dreaming, the experience was as real to you as what happens while you’re awake. To your unconscious mind, both experiences are equally real.

Many times, this use of your imagination during the process of manifesting is referred to as “visualization,” but this term is somewhat misleading, because (as any child could tell you) imagining goes far beyond just seeing. In order to manifest your desires, you have to imagine experiencing the desired situation or condition right here, right now, with the wild abandon of a four year old.

You have to see it around you, feel it within you. Bring as many of your senses into the imagination as possible: tasting, hearing, smelling, touching, as well as seeing your manifested desire as a reality that surrounds you. Most importantly, you must FEEL the desired experience having manifested into reality.

Feel the joy it would bring you. Experience your heart swelling in your chest. Feel the smile spreading across your face. Your eyes may fill with tears of joy. You want to dance and jump and throw your arms about in utter glee. Please do so; it just makes the imagined experience that much stronger.

This is the first basic component of how to manifest your desires. Be sure that you do it right, not just knowing what you want, but feeling what you want, in order to create the abundance you desire in your life.
